We developed and photographed the cover artwork for the so called German »Grafikmagazin«. The focus of this issue is dedicated to (design) education. After much consideration, we decided on the symbolism of the eye.
The eye represents wisdom, perception and knowledge in various cultures. In modern contexts it stands for enlightenment, self-awareness, vision, understanding and the ability to see things beneath the surface.
In analytical psychology, the eye embodies consciousness and knowledge. Applied to design education, it symbolizes the ability to observe and visual competence. It's about developing a "keen eye" for details, shapes, colors and compositions. Criticism and feedback must be viewed with a “critical eye” in order to filter out strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement. In addition, one of the skills of designers is being able to change perspective in order to recognize the needs of the environment and different target groups.
The symbolism of the eye embodies these visual analogies of close observation, criticism, empathy and visual communication that are essential to developing designers being able to become competent and socially conscious. Design can ultimately be perceived through the eye.
Another aspect in the visualization of this image is the representation of the eye as a disoriented object in space. It seems like a newborn creature, curiously looking at its surroundings, on its way to discover the world.
The final artwork was printed on a paper with a metallic iridescent surface.
